Strange But True! Unwanted Roommates Even the cleanest home contain approximately 452 species of assorted insects and vermin. But this is much fewer than it used to be. A 1860 survey of a house in Kent (UK) revealed that there were 3,287 assorted 'animals' living there. They included pinhole borers, cockroaches, booklice, bookworms, Pharaoh's ants, wasps, houseflies, bluebottles, greenfly, ladybirds, carpet beetles, moths, wood beetles, pipistrelles, bats, mice, rats, dormice, toads, millipedes, cellar beetles, mosquitoes, black beetles, black ants, flourworms, leather beetles, silverfish, stream flies, grain weevils, cheese mites, mealworms, earwigs, woodlice, slugs, earthworms, snails, spiders, firebrats, sparrows, house martins, centipedes......and the human owners!
